Definition of Speech and Language

How is language different from speech?
Definition of Language: a group of rules that include-
- What a word means
- Word tense (watch, watched, watching)
- Combination of a string of words that convey meaning (sentence: "The boy is playing baseball" vs. "Baseball boy the playing is")
- Word combinations dependent on specific situations ("Would you please move your chair" vs. "Move your chair!")
Definition of speech:
- It is the ability to produce sounds by coordinating and moving specific oral motor structures (e.g., tongue, mouth) at the right time.
Language and speech problems may coexist and/or exist one without the other. The problem can be rated on a rating scale of mild to severe.
